A JOURNEY THROUGH HISTORY AND TASTE
Officially established in 2019, the Strada dei Marroni e dei Sapori dei Colli Trevigiani (Road of Chestnuts and Flavours of the Treviso Hills) is not just a food and wine itinerary, but a sensory immersion that crosses the foothills of Treviso, ideally uniting the communities of Combai and Pederobba.
The Protagonist: The Marrone IGP
In this area, chestnut trees benefit from a unique microclimate. But be careful: don't just call it a chestnut. The Marrone IGP stands out for its superior quality: it is larger, with sweet and crunchy flesh, making it perfect for consumption.
The Route celebrates two distinct excellences:
Marrone di Combai PGI: Produced in 11 municipalities in the Miane area, it is recognisable by its ellipsoidal shape. Its flesh is light, floury and very sweet, able to withstand cooking perfectly while maintaining a crunchy texture.
Marrone del Monfenera PGI: Grown in 18 municipalities between the Pederobba and Montello areas, it has an ovoid shape and a bright brown colour with dark streaks. The flesh, which tends towards straw yellow, offers an intense flavour and a pleasant creaminess.
For centuries, chestnut cultivation has been the pillar of local survival, giving rise to a veritable “chestnut civilisation”. The roots of this tradition go back to the Middle Ages:
In Combai, documents dating back to 1665 bear witness to a fascinating form of community management: harvesting was collective and the fruits were distributed equally among all the families in the community.
In the Pedemontana area, the regulations are even older. A document from 1351 served as a veritable “public statute”, regulating the harvesting and use of the forest among the heads of families. Notarial sources from the period confirm the importance of these trees, reporting severe complaints about illegal felling or out-of-season grazing that could have damaged the precious harvest.
Travelling along the road means immersing yourself in an area of extraordinary interest, ideally located between Bassano del Grappa and Vittorio Veneto, recognised by UNESCO as two World Heritage Sites: the Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene and the Montegrappa Biosphere Reserve.
In the Prosecco Hills, nature meets man's work in “heroic viticulture”: vineyards climbing up dizzying slopes, the famous Rive, which produce one of the most famous wines in the world.
Monte Grappa, on the other hand, is a protected area and a laboratory for coexistence between man and nature, where environmental protection goes hand in hand with the development of the territory.
In addition to chestnuts, the itinerary offers a mosaic of typical delicacies:
- Cheeses: From the delicate freshness of Casatella Trevigiana PDO to the strong character of Formaggio Ubriaco, aged in grape marc.
- Sopressa Trevigiana: The salami that symbolises local hospitality, perfect when accompanied by a slice of hot polenta.
- Chestnut Honey: A dark, aromatic nectar, whose pleasantly bitter aftertaste creates a sublime contrast with mature cheeses.
